OPPA testifies in support of Senate Bill 207: Co-pay Accumulator
OPPA submitted written testimony to members of the Ohio Senate Financial Institutions, Insurance, and Technology Committee on Oct. 21 in support of Senate Bill 207 - Co-pay Accumulator. In her testimony, OPPA Executive Director shared with members that too many Ohioans face untreated or undertreated mental illness, often due in part to the high cost of medications. While manufacturer copay assistance can help patients afford treatment, some insurers now use copay accumulator programs that prevent these funds from counting toward deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums—often without patients’ knowledge.

OPPA Extends Condolences to Dr. Dale Svendsen and Family
The Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association (OPPA) extends its heartfelt condolences to Dale Svendsen, MD, and his family on the passing of his beloved wife of 59 years, Gail Svendsen, on October 13, 2025. Whenever possible, Gail accompanied Dr. Svendsen to OPPA meetings and social gatherings, where she formed many lasting friendships and became a cherished member of the OPPA community. Her warmth, grace, and kindness will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

MHA announces launch of new "Pets and Mental Health" resource center
Mental Health America (MHA) recently announced the launch of its newest resource center, Pets and Mental Health. Created in partnership with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), the resource center includes information, tools, and events that highlight the powerful role that animals can have in healing. Having an animal companion — be it furry, feathered, scaly, or otherwise — has many benefits for mental and physical health. Pet ownership provides comfort, makes you feel happy, and helps you be calmer and relaxed. Having a pet can also help relieve stress and symptoms of some mental and physical health conditions.
